Hi [name removed],
The alternating hands principle is in general applied all the time (right-left-right-left-…). There are a few rule-based exceptions from that principle which I explain in later chapters of the course, but when you are beginning to learn finger drumming all successive note values are played by alternating hands. Depending on the note values that you play in a drum groove, you basically get into these kinds of situations:
|= main counting times indicators in regular 4/4 time
1, 2, 3, 4 = beats of the bar
R, L = right, left
BD, SD, HH = Bass Drum, Snare Drum, HiHat for a very simple demonstration of a groove.
Quarter Notes:
| | | |
1 2 3 4
R L R L
BD SD BD SD
8th Notes:
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
R L R L R L R L
BD HH SD HH BD HH SD HH
16th Notes
1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e …
R L R L R L R L R L …
BD HH HH HH SD HH HH HH BD HH …
Hope this helps.
Best regards
Andreas
