Placement of Ride Cymbal and Crash Cymbal in the Standard Layout

Hey Andreas,

I went through the course, and now at Intermediate level, so far so good.

Just got one question, why would you place the RD in the middle up and play it by index fingers?

I mean it seems less stretched if exchanging RD with CR, and playing the BD and RD at the same time with thumb and middle finger.

(And so is the Cow Bell in Xtreme Layout)

And since we use less CR than RD in usual context, leaving CR harder to access should be OK.

Or did I miss something here? Hope we could discuss this alternative a little.

Regards,

[…]

Hey […],

Hope all is well. Good to see you recorded your first drum tracks with finger drumming!

I get your point. I agree that if you would exchange RD with CR you would get into a less stretched hand posture. However, I feel that I am able to better control hit velocities with my index finger when playing the BD with the thumb at the same time. As the CR is most often used as an accent, hit velocity control might not be as important as it is when playing more sophisticated RD patterns. Also, I tend to use the CR quite often, maybe even more often than I play the RD.

Eventually there is nothing that should hold you back from creating your custom pad layout in which you exchange the RD with the CR pad if you feel it better suits your needs and playing style.

What do you think about that?

Best regards,

Andreas

Yes I encountered this problem for that I can’t play the RD as evenly as HH, maybe due to my smaller hands.

Since there’s no other technical limitation, I’ll try both way ( the original layout and my amended layout) and experiment which fits me better.

And thank you for your kind reply, as always. :)

Sounds good. Just let me know whenever there is something on your mind about finger drumming that you’d like to discuss. I’m always interested in user feedback.
