circuit with samples for finger drumming? Ideal standalone hardware?

Andreas already reviewed the Novation Circuit (https://www.xpresspads.com/novation-circuit-test-and-review-video/) and stated that it is not suitable for finger drumming, because one cannot change the layout.
Since firmware 1.2 (april ’16) you can use the components suite to edit all kinds of stuff. You can now load your own samples.
So that might make the Circuit the ultimate self contained Xtreme fingerdrumming tool; it’d be so nice not to need anything else than a pad device.

Has anybody tried this? Are the pads large enough?

If that is still not an option, how about we get together and design our own ideal XpressPad device?
My list of Musts:
– all in one solution: pads, sound generation and speaker
– 32 good quality pads for Xtreme
– controls to change sound sets
– €200-300
Nice-to-haves:
– (splash) water- and dustproof (wireless Qi charging) for noodling in nature
– synthesized sounds that react dynamically to velocity, speed

Awesome idea!!

Thanks for bringing this up! – I’ll definitively have a look into this and see what’s possible with this Novation Circuit 1.2 firmware update.

Great idea to create an ideal Xtreme finger drumming controller by the way… I have thought about that as well some time ago, collected thoughts and designs and who knows... if demand for this is strong enough it might be worthwhile to work it out and then present it to the right people.

Anyone interested in this – please join!

Great to see you like the idea!!
maybe it would be easiest to start with the sound part and reuse a great existing controller; say a box that you could connect via USB, that has a speaker and internal batterypower. Perhaps sized so it could be like a really flat pizzabox under the controller. Just plug in any pad controller and Boing Boom Chak.

I’m also thinking along the lines of including some exercises from the courses, like writers prompts or just stuff to keep you drumming. I can already see myself drumming on a folding chair somewhere, anywhere.

I figure a prototype box could be built for less than €100.

Any geeks here? I am talking raspberry pi, sunvox, a compact semi decent drum speaker and large-ish powerbank.

I have been thinking about a standalone, selfcontained drumbox with USB power. I see more people are thinking along similar lines: the Zynthian (http://zynthian.org) has the same parts I was thinking about. I think the zynthian is a good idea, but not for our purposes. So I will still continue to think and maybe soon build something.

I need a question answered, so I can move on to more important things: how important is sound quality? Please express this importance in the amount of money that would need to be spent on compact speakers and amp. To give some context: I could use the 2.1 JBL speakers from a Dell XPS L502x. Yes, with a subwoofer. It would still fit in a one inch high pizzabox, like the bottom half of a laptop. However, these speakerparts cost €60, which is whithout the amplifier. Adding a decent amplifier and DAC would surely put the price of the speakers at about €100. Is that too much?

Hi buis,

Sorry for the late reply. That might look like I lost interest in that idea but that’s absolutely not the case… I’m just super-busy right now and don’t have enough capacity to focus on it immediately. I definitively will think thoroughly about your suggestions and get back with thoughts and ideas. Please give me a couple more days.

Best regards,

Andreas

oh wow: this looks like a good place to start:
http://blog.nextthing.co/making-music-with-sunvox-on-pocketc-h-i-p/
along with a velostat 32 point matrix (see image to get an idea). I think it could be at least semi flexible. It could be based on neoprene and covered in leather. You could sow it on the pants of your thighs. Now *that*’s lederhosen!

Here’s more info on how to use the $9 (not a typo: https://getchip.com/pages/chip) CHIP computer as a MIDI synth.
https://www.hackster.io/11802/c-h-i-p-midi-arpeggiating-synth-e311ab
Hook it to a 5v battery, USB MIDI pad controller and a portable speaker with 1/8″ jack and you have a standalone device for finger drumming.
Details on battery and audio connector: http://docs.getchip.com/chip.html#power-up

Interesting one… although I haven’t really had the chance to fully wrap my brain around that topic. Definitively someting to keep monitoring.

Btw, I’ve just become a beta tester for http://www.sensel.com which have developed the “morph” tablet, which’s capabilities and application options are mindblowing. They will release morph in december and this weekend I had the chance to make two videos about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeuvIk8aPQI
