Alternating Hands Confusion

I am in the mid way to the course: Intermediate 16th note straight fills. In the meantime, I am trying to play some songs every now and then just to see how I am doing in real life scenarios. So far so good. However, sometimes I get confused about alternating hands.

In the beginner section of the course we alternated hands on 1/8th notes. In the intermediate section we started alternating hands on 1/16th notes. Which one should we apply in real life scenarios?

Considering the attached song, the end of the line intro by Metallica: In the beginning, if I alternate my hands on 16th’s it becomes kinda awkward and does not feel right as I have to hit always with my right hand. What feels natural is alternating on 1/8ths. Starting from bar 9 however, it is definitely alternating on 1/16ths.

So as I see it, alternating hands frequency is not fixed throughout the song and may change according to the rhythm. If it is a 1/4 cymbal pattern we should alternate on 8ths. If it is a 1/8 cymbal pattern we should alternate hands on 16ths. Is that the correct approach? I wrote the alternating hands which I think should be applied on the music sheet. Please let me know what you think

I checked all over the course to find some information about this but couldn’t find it. Maybe I missed it.

Hi baranoid,
Please note that reviewing practice progress is not part of the offer that is included in an eCourse purchase but in this case, I'll make a one-time exception and post "my view" on the example that you've submitted as an answer. Please find it attached to this post.

To answer your specific questions:

"Considering the attached song, the end of the line intro by Metallica: In the beginning, if I alternate my hands on 16th’s it becomes kinda awkward and does not feel right as I have to hit always with my right hand. What feels natural is alternating on 1/8ths. Starting from bar 9 however, it is definitely alternating on 1/16ths." --> You're doing it the right way. you should apply 8th / 16th note alternation where it makes sense and this can differ from song part to song part.

"So as I see it, alternating hands frequency is not fixed throughout the song and may change according to the rhythm. If it is a 1/4 cymbal pattern we should alternate on 8ths. If it is a 1/8 cymbal pattern we should alternate hands on 16ths. Is that the correct approach?" --> This is correct.

I hope that more rules of the technique will become more obvious once you've completed the intermediate and advanced chapters.

Cheers

Andreas

Hello Andreas. Sorry for asking too much. I get overexcited every now and then about this xpresspads technique that's all:) You are far too kind with your reply. Thank you!
