2 basic noob questions

Question 1: still a beginner but making fast progress. Would it be horrible to modify and start using the thumb in a kick/open hats combo hit? I cant seem to get the strength in my middle finger to get a solid kick out of the pad.
Question 2: This may very well be the cause of question 1. I have my MPD Akai on easels. Is this not recommended? I’m really limited with desk space for it and my desk sits kind of high, so with the MPD flat I lose leverage. Thoughts on this?

Hi Bruce,
A1: yes, do that if it feels better
A2: it's quite important to have a firm ground for your pad controller. without a firm ground it's harder to play precisely and everything will be a bit shaky. if you can get a simple but hard piece of board to place on your lap while you sit, that might be a solution you like to go ahead with. it worked very well for me.
Best regards
Andreas
